We tend to focus much time and energy on on-page SEO techniques because those are the ones we can control. And there is certainly nothing wrong with that. On page tactics are helpful and effective, so if you’ve been zeroing in your efforts there, keep up the good work! However, it is also important that we don’t take our eyes off the off-page SEO portion of optimizing our site. While these techniques can be trickier and we don’t always have control over this part of the process, it is still imperative that we do all we can to positively influence off-page SEO. After all, off-page makes up a whopping 75% of overall SEO.
One key to this process is to develop a strategy for achieving inbound links. Quantity is important, but quality is even more influential. Every business dream is to have a major news network or a dominate, widely-read industry blog link to their site, right? How do we go about making that dream a reality?
Here are 3 Steps for Mastering Off-Page SEO Through Inbound Links
1. Be Link Worthy
Create great content by writing from a new perspective and offering something fresh! Don’t be afraid to stand out – in fact, in an online world saturated with content, you’re going to need to make an effort to be a little different. The end goal here is to get other people to be willing to promote your site and your content by linking to it, so the first step is to make sure you’re producing content that’s worth linking to!
2. Develop a Target List for Inbound Links
Whether you focus on pages linking to your competitors or on sites that have high authority in your industry, the goal here is to think through all the possible targeted links that you would love to have promoting your site’s pages. Get creative. These don’t just have to be people or business you know online. They could even be someone you met at a conference or networking event. (Make sure you hold on to that contact info!)
3. Make Yourself Visible and Make the Request
How do you go about making yourself visible? Begin to form relationships with these people via social media and by commenting on their blogs. They’ll remember you (wouldn’t you remember someone who left a genuine blog comment on your site or who consistently liked or shared your Facebook posts?) When the time is appropriate, ask for an opportunity to guest blog through a personal request (don’t send a mass message!).
