How to Write Marketing Business Plans In 5 Simple Steps

A business plan doesn´t require expertise to create. You can design yours in these 5 simple steps.

Every business needs marketing business plans. Creating a marketing business plan is more difficult if you are planning a start-up than if you are already operating a franchise. But making a business plan isn’t as hard as it might sound. You just need 5 essential parts to structure your plan appropriately. From there, you can iron out the details!

Marketing Business PlansBusiness marketing plans are a roadmap that you follow in order to ensure your business acquires customers and keeps them. Use this marketing template to categorize the major details of your business.

Part 1: Executive Summary

As the name implies, the executive summary will explain the plan and its major components, giving the reader a general outline of what will follow. It’s recommended to write this last, after you have the other 4 parts written.

Part 2: Target Customers

For every business, it is central that you know your potential customers well. The potential customer, or prospect, should be described down to the little details–demographic profile, gender, age, likes and dislikes, etc! The more you can imagine about this prospect, the better the rest of your marketing efforts will go. By knowing your prospect´s exact wants and needs, you will be better able to target a product or service that reaches them.

Part 3: The Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

All marketing business plans require this special element to distinguish the company from other companies. You need to present the particular formula of your company’s service or product that makes you stand out from the competition. Maybe you present a service that makes your prospect’s life easier, or perhaps you have specialists in an area that other businesses in your field don’t have. How did you make your product? How do you deliver it? What makes you special, in other words?

Part 4: Positioning and Pricing

You should position yourself so that you are reaching your desired prospect. Are you quick, convenient, and cheap–or premier, only for the select few? Depending on the type of prospect you want to target, you will position yourself in the industry using a pricing strategy that matches your company image. In this section of the marketing plan, you need to describe your positioning in-depth, explaining how your pricing strategy will support it.

Part 5: Distribution

Many business forget this vital part of marketing business plans. You have to have the logistics worked out in order to ensure that customers will really buy from you. Make it easy to acquire—and if you’re offering real value, then the customers will flock to you!

How will the customer buy? From your website? Phone contact? Or will they get the product through a middle-man distributor? Perhaps you will offer multiple ways to access the product.
